The End Begins on Sinai

Matthew 24:15  When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand.

The "holy place"

Pslams 68:17  The chariots of God are twenty thousand, even thousands of angels: the Lord is among them, as in Sinai, in the holy place. 

Sinai is where God gave Moses the Law.

Sinai will be where a future ruler will give a new law:

Daniel 11:45  And he shall plant the tabernacles of his palace between the seas in the glorious holy mountain; yet he shall come to his end, and none shall help him.

This future ruler will attempt to make his abode in the "glorious holy mountain" that is "between the seas"

To the South lies the Red Sea.

To the West lies the Gulf of Suez.

To the North lies the Mediterranean Sea.

And to the East lies the Gulf of Aqaba.

This future ruler poses as God and sits in the "Temple" of God. 

2 Thessalonians 2:3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;  4  Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.

Is Sinai a Temple of God?

Exodus 19:18  And mount Sinai was altogether on a smoke, because the LORD descended upon it in fire: and the smoke thereof ascended as the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mount quaked greatly.
Exodus 19:20  And the LORD came down upon mount Sinai, on the top of the mount: and the LORD called Moses up to the top of the mount; and Moses went up.
Exodus 19:23  And Moses said unto the LORD, The people cannot come up to mount Sinai: for thou chargedst us, saying, Set bounds about the mount, and sanctify it.

You judge.

If the event that opens the Great Tribulation is the so called antichrist profaning the Holy Mountain Sinai, then perhaps the very name of the mount holds significance to the Revelation:

The two names of Sinai and Horeb, meaning respectively "moon" and "sun," are of a cosmological nature. According to the higher critics, the "mountain of Yhwh" is called "Sinai" in J (Ex. xix. 11, xxxiv. 4) and P (Ex. xvi. 1; xxiv. 16; xxxiv. 28, 32; Lev. xxv. 1, xxvi. 46, xxvii. 34). On the other hand, in E, the earlier source, Horeb is the seat of Yhwh (Ex. iii. 1, xvii. 6, xxxiii. 6; in the last-cited passage the words "from Mount Horeb" belong to verse 9). source

Not only does this excerpt from the Jewish Encyclopedia provide more evidence that Sinai is the Temple (seat of Yhwh), it also tells us that Sinai means "moon" and its other name, Horeb means "sun"

Revelation 6:12  And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood;

Does the verse above describe the "desolation" of Mt. Sinai as a result of abomination?

Revelation 8:7 The first angel sounded, and there followed hail and fire mingled with blood, and they were cast upon the earth: and the third part of trees was burnt up, and all green grass was burnt up. 8  And the second angel sounded, and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea: and the third part of the sea became blood;

We see in Revelation's 6th Seal how that the Moon (possibly Sinai) was turned to blood and now in the 1st Trumpet we are shown hail, fire and blood being cast to the earth. 

I understand that "as it were"or "hos" in the Greek meaning "like" indicates simile, but this does not preclude the conflagration described from being the result of an actual mountain that is destroyed by the wrath of God.
